Your answers to thesequestions are what starts to form the bones of what you will write in your paper.?Watch: “Alarm Will Sound”In your dance review you will critique this dance work, choreographed byUniversity of Utah Department of Modern Dance’s own Professor Eric Handman.How to Write a Dance ReviewThere are four elements a dance review should include:?Describe what you saw?Analyze the choreography?Offer your reactions to the dance?Appraise the performance(but not necessarily in this order, you are free to arrange when and howyou write about each of these elements as it fits the pacing of your review)courtesy of George Stevens Academy1) Describe What You Saw?The title of the dance, the names of the dancers and choreographer,the time and place of performance, the name of the music and thecomposers of the music.?Comments on theatrical elements of the dance – costumes, props,lighting, scenery.?An overview or general description of the dance.courtesy of George Stevens Academy2) Analyze the Choreography?How is the dance organized? (ABA/Theme & Variation, Motif & Development?)?Is there a story or narrative, or is it abstract??Are there characters? How do the performers relate to each other??Talk about the style or kind of dance it is.?How did the movement relate to the musical score? How are rhythm and speedused? Are they constant or changing??How is the space used? Do the dancers stay upright, go to the floor, or upsidedown? What about the direction the dance moves in??What shapes do the dancers and choreography make (round-linear-soft-hard-symmetrical-undefined)??What is the energy of the movement (lush-aggressive-weighted-light-heavy-sharp-gentle)?courtesy of George Stevens Academy3) Your Reactions to the Dance?Did the performers look like they were enjoying themselves??Did they look like they knew the dance moves??Were they in time with the music and in time with each other??Were the costumes/scenery/props/music used effectively? Or didthey feel out of place??Did they have an exciting entrance or opening and a satisfyingending or exit??Did they put sufficient effort into the performance??What did the dance make you think?courtesy of George Stevens Academy4) Appraise the PerformanceForm an opinion based on what was learned in the previous stages ofthe critique.?What impression did the dance make on you??Were you moved by this work or the performance? Why, or whynot??How did it make you feel??Would you say this was a successful piece??Tell us how they could improve for their next performance.courtesy of George Stevens AcademyKeep in Mind?It is helpful to be writing notes WHILE watching the dance, in order to notice certaindetails about the movement or thoughts you may have in the moment.?Beware of using the words “I liked” or “I disliked” as they are not very specific.?Make sure you support your opinions! For every time you make a personal statement(such as, “I feel…” or “I thought…”) you must cite a specific example(s) from the dancewhich explain why you feel that way.?Avoid storytelling at all costs. While you can compare the dance to things you’rereminded of, it is not your place as a critic to imagine a story for the dance you see. Also,explaining every aspect of the evening is not necessary. Concentrate on the things youfeel are really noteworthy (good or bad) and provide your opinion on those moments.?This is a critique, and you should use a critical eye! Don’t be afraid to question choicesmade by the choreographer, or point out things you felt may have been unclear orunnecessary.
